Personal Spa Lighting

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Purchasing a home hot tub system can be an extremely exciting endeavor for individuals, couples and families. What many of them anticipate is hours of endless enjoyment and quality time, though they have no idea of the journey they are actually about to begin. The hot tub industry has become extremely diverse and technologically advanced. There are numerous models and designs to choose from and the additional features and options that are available can overwhelm almost anyone. And it is definitely a positive overwhelming feeling. There is a sudden sense of endless wonder that washes over many first time portable spa purchasers and they feel like the world is at their fingertips. And in a sense it is. The world of hot tub use can be oriented to fit all lifestyles and interests. It can be incorporated into a sports oriented backyard design or a meditative yoga environment.

Purchasing a hot tub or spa system has become an invitation to developing your own personal backyard sanctuary. And regardless of the primary use intention you have with your tub or the design you select and the specific features you opt for, a great lighting system adds wonders to any hot tub and backyard experience. Most of the tubs and spas themselves will come with a manufacture included lighting feature. These can be extremely basic though sometimes they do get elaborate. This is why it is important to consider your lighting needs before making your purchase. There are numerous additional lighting features that can be purchased separately or included as an optional design feature. To ensure that your spa and backyard environment have the dynamic lighting that will fit best with your overall theme, you should consider what your needs will be and what you would like to have included with the tub purchase itself. This will make the rest of your thematic design planning a lot easier.

Eggs and Bread and a Fireplace Stove

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Whether you date cooking with fire from the Lower Paleolithic era some four hundred thousand years ago or from the time of Benjamin Franklin and his remarkable contributions to the indoor cast-iron stove, there is nothing quite like a wood-fired cooked meal, whether using an indoor or outdoor fireplace stove.  We’re a long way from the stone age and we no longer need to gather the stones and wood necessary for a hearth and fuel, but we do have to take in consideration the variety of fire places that we can buy today.  For instance, if you want warmth, then you would do well to pick up a fireplace that looks a lot like a regular campfire, largely because, in addition to cooking, you can use it for heat on a cold night, whether you’re in your backyard or a forest.  If you’re buying for your backyard, remember the prices can vary dramatically depending on style, looks, and size.  But we’re not here to figure out the best look of your fireplace, but rather what to cook in it.  Here’s one suggestion for when you get up really early:

One of the easiest recipes possible is “Toad in the Hole.”  You may know it by “Eggs on a Raft,” or any number of names, but it’s essentially bread and eggs, with a bit of butter, salt, and pepper.  The only other thing you need is a pan to fry it in.  Take a bread slice and then cut a hole in it, a two inch circle, and then toast the bread on both its sides.  Once it’s toasted, then melt butter in the pan, then wait for the sound of sizzling.  Simply, break the egg and let it drop into the hole, ensuring that the yolk stays in its place.  Let the egg cook, add salt and pepper, and voila!

Using almost the same ingredients, you can make French Toast.  The only additions are milk and sugar.  Okay, you’ll need a bowl, too.   Break some eggs into the bowl, add milk (about a cup) and then salt, pepper and sugar.  You might want to add a dash of vanilla, if you have it.  Beat the mix with a fork, dip in the bread slices, then brown them in the hot frying pan.  In no time at all, you’ll be enjoying a dish that’s been around since perhaps the ancient Romans.  Of course, there’s controversy on this point.  Some reports go back to 1066, while other accounts give credit to this particular recipe arising in 1660, again in 1724, and even as late as 1870.  Maybe it doesn’t matter, as long as it tastes as good as it does.

Hot Tubs, Paper Tigers

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

When you have the ability to come home from a long day’s work, and unwind in your own personal spa, you’ll see the rewards right away, and wonder why it took you so long to make the decision to make room in your living space for this wonderful feature.  A hot tub can add charm and mystique to your days and nights, and it never gets old.  There’s no doubt that the human body loves water, loves to be near it, and loves to soak in it.  Since we’re made of mostly water, the cells respond to it very favorably.  You might never notice all these things going on at the molecular level, and only realize that hot tubs are simply amazing.

It’s a gorgeous feeling when the stress of the day starts to disappear, and your muscles start to relax and respond to the hot water and the jets.  It’s something you can do all by yourself, a solitary treat and retreat away from it all, or it can be a way of inviting more people into your life, and turning it into a party.  With some of the ambient lighting features, you can add a dash of remarkable style and flair to any party, or you could even use the lighting all by yourself.  Relaxing in a spa is a way of reminding yourself that you have arrived, at least for the moment, and being in the moment is all that matters.

There have been some scientific studies of late that suggest that our reflex for fight-or-flight is overdeveloped, especially for the contemporary age.  It is an old survival mechanism that was extremely useful for when life was much more difficult, with threats like wild tigers at every turn, and the lifespan was shorter.  As our lives got longer, and threats of immediate harm became less frequent, the reflex didn’t change.  As a result, we have a tendency to overreact to simple everyday stimuli with the old reflex, which comes out when we’re not necessarily conscious of it.  One of the most effective ways to deal with any pressure is to be in the moment fully, which allows us to respond with clarity and good judgement.  Spending some time every day soaking in a hot tub is a fantastic way to develop the capacity to be fully in the moment, fully present in the physical body, which is a practice that helps to calm this old reflex and start building healthier responses to the events that we come across during our days, whether the tigers are paper or real.

The History of Next Day Blinds

Monday, October 12th, 2009

When we think of blinds our minds instantly go to all of the many different varieties of blinds currently available to us: horizontal and vertical, plastic and wood, mini and large.  We also think of the many different companies that make blinds, such as Next Day Blinds.  Since they opened their doors in 1994, Next Day Blind issues have been minimal because of the wide variety of blinds, shades, and shutters that they offer as well as their excellent customer service.

From the beginning Next Day Blinds has made the safety and quality of their product the very top priority.  In 1996 reports came out that many companies had used a lead based formula in their vinyl and metal mini blinds. Although lead is an element that is found naturally in the environment, long-term exposure can lead to many health problems such as anemia, kidney damage, brain damage, and nervous system damage.  Next Day Blinds, however, openly stated that their blinds were safe due to their lead-free formula. In 1998, Next Day Blinds began to manufacture their own line of products as well as sell many nationally known brands.  They also began to further emphasize the importance of custom sizing and construction of all window treatments.  With 34 locations throughout the Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, Next Day Blinds continues to expand.  In 2008 they received Angie’s List Super Service Award for outstanding customer service without any negative reports as well as the 2009 Better Business Torch Award for Marketplace Excellence.

Throughout the past 15 years Next Day Blinds has strived for excellence both with the quality of their product and their customer service. They provide custom made products at an affordable price and they do it with a smile.  By continuing on this path, we can only foresee the next 15 years being as successful.

The benefits of hot tubs spas

Monday, September 28th, 2009

I have been reading up on the benefits of hot tubs spas. There is a lot of mounting information available as to the benefits of what they call hydrotherapy, soaking in hot water. The body is very receptive to this hydrotherapy. The hot water is very relaxing and comforting to the body and mind, The swirling jet action of the hot water relieves tension and aching muscles from over work, working out or general daily stress. The heat causes the body’s blood vessels to dilate and therefore increase circulation and blood flow opening the body to natural healing and energy flows. Stress reduction alone will help the body tremendously and the use of a hot tub or spa, coupling the heat and messaging effects of the water together make for a perfect combination for relaxation and body health improvement.

I began to look into getting a hot tub and found there are a lot of choices and prices to choose from. Small single and double tubs are available ready made and you can go up to a tub of any size and shape with a custom one and enough money to afford it.

In my situation I am looking at something on the smaller side. With limited space for it I am looking to put in a tub not larger than about three to four hundred gallons. There is an electrical hook up on my back patio that will accommodate the hot tub but I will need to get the plumbing put in for one. This is scheduled for early next week. Once that is in I hope to have the tub delivered within a month and up and running just in time to take advantage of hot water soaking as the winter arrives.
Blue Adder Use Only

The Brooklyn Flea

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Foreclosures.  Brooklyn residents are feeling it.  Chicago residents are feeling it.  And Los Angeles residents are feeling it.  What is “it” exactly?  It is the feeling that life may not be the same as it has been.  But in these times of economic struggle and worry, there is still fun to be had.  And in New York, some of the fun is at the Flea Markets.  Perusing the tables and the stalls at these markets in New York has long been a past time of a certain population, the artistic and the poor.

A great way to find cool items for one’s house, at a minimal cost.  Now days, other populations are taking part in the tradition of rummaging through others cast offs, and they are finding that not only are the deals great, but there is interesting treasures amidst the ‘cast-offs’.  One of the best places to treasure hunt is at the Brooklyn Flea.  There is something for everyone at this outdoor market place.  Relics and furniture, items rescued from the trip to the landfill.

The stuff one finds here is more than just a good find to be found during recession.  They are often times more interesting than anything out there in the new stores, more history than the new items off the conveyor belt.  For not only are there old items, but pieces made new, by artisans and craftsman.  Creative and beautiful bits and pieces that make a house a home.  In Brooklyn, the Flea is not just a shopping experience, it is a hub, where the community and the artists come together each week.

Chic fashion designers show their work, as well as chefs in the food stalls preparing and selling everything from grilled cheese sandwiches, to bread infused with lobster.  This one time small market, has grown in population, and moved from the original Saturday location in Fort Greene, to a grand market held underneath the Brooklyn Bridge each Sunday.  Hard times economically, do not mean hard times socially or emotionally.  The Brooklyn Flea is just one bit of evidence to that fact.

Reduce your electricity use

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Everyone is going green and it’s not a bad idea. So what if the government suspended the cash for clunkers program. There are still ways that you can save on your energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint this summer.  Here are some easy steps you can take to reduce your electricity bill. And we all know how high that can be in the summer if you run the air conditioning constantly.

Here are some home renovations you can make:

Insulate your house: You can save yourself about 20 to 30 percent on your heating bills and reduce your Carbon dioxide emissions. If you live somewhere colder you can even consider super insulation.

New windows: If you have old windows in your home they could have invisible cracks in them that you can’t see. That means that the air you are using to either cool or heat your home could be escaping. Inevitably, you are letting the bought air out!

New blinds: Having window coverings replaces or put on can also help with your electricity bills. If the sun does not beat through your house via your windows you won’t have to use as much energy to cool it. Consider going to Next Day Blinds, they have a great assortment of styles.  Next Day Blinds also has showrooms available in certain states so you can go check out the shades, covers and array of everything else in person.

Other stuff you can do:

Wash your clothes in cold water: It will use less energy because your washer will not have to heat up to warm up the water.

Only run your dishwasher when it’s full: If you wait until you have a full load of dirty dishes, you will use the dishwasher less often, resulting in less electricity use.

A backyard oasis can be yours

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Families are probably spending more time at home these days. Bringing back old school things like game nights and other family bonding experiences are making a totally awesome comeback. And despite the fact that the economy is lagging, it could be doing great things for American families. When families spend more time together everyone tends to function on a better and healthier level together. And this of course is what families are for. With summer comes spending time outside. Whether that be catching lightening bugs or grilling on the bbq island.  There is nothing like having some outside fun to bring people together.

If you have found that you would like to get more out of your backyard experience then you should consider picking up a portable spa to add to your yard and list of family activities. There are even spas that are inflatable now and there are lots of two person hot tub varieties that you can purchase as well.

Another way to spruce up your backyard space and bring the family together is to purchase some sort of game or activity that everyone can play. If you have to room, a badminton net or volleyball net is a great way to bring the family and friends together at your place. Having this in your backyard is also a great way to keep your kids active without having to encourage them to. They will want to play and have their friends over to play as well.

Having a great backyard will bring you and your family and friends a sense of togetherness. Togetherness is just so great and exactly what everyone needs in these tough times. Make the most of your space and give at least one of these options a try! You are guaranteed to enjoy yourself with any of these options.

Hot Tubs and the Reduction of Fibromyalgia Pain

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Fibromyalgia is a debilitating problem for many people.  Those in pain, inadvertently clench their muscles in response to the pain, which only serves to lead to more pain.  It is a vicious cycle.  Blood flow to the areas most in need is cut off, and the tension just starts all over again.  For those with fibromyalgia, the lifestyle today, of working like crazy then coming home to relax on the couch is doubly bad, as blood flow to the organs and to the muscles is severely affected by too little exercise.  All this leads to the pain increasing over time.

One thing is certain, that exercise will serve to ease the pain, it’s just that getting over the pain in order to physically move, to run or bike, can be a tough hurdle.  The increase in ones pulse rate is key to solving the issues and to the removal of the negative effects of the disease.  Just a few minutes a day, walking or stretching will do wonders, and one way to ease the tension in order to be able to perform any sort of exercise is to soak for a few minutes in a hot tub, as in the models found at choosehottubsdirect.com.  These spas and hot tubs come in a wide variety, at very affordable prices, and could be the beginning step towards a journey of pain-free living.

As one soaks in hot water, the blood flow increases and the muscles begin to loosen up on their own.  Afterward, it is much easier to stretch out muscles that are already warmed up.  Once the body is loosened, walking or biking is much easier and much less painful of an activity.  Another way that water is helpful with those so inflicted, is through the regular practice of water aerobics.  The impact of such exercise is greatly reduced by the effect of buoyancy the water creates.

Stress on the body, especially on the joints is alleviated, but still provides the benefits of a work out that will increase the pulse and so increase the flow of blood to the essential parts of the body.  And then of course, once the work out is finished, it is back to the hot tub for another quick soak.  This is just one of the many ways to alleviate the physical discomfort of fibromyalgia, and to move towards the healing process and towards a life that is finally pain-free.

Searing

Friday, June 26th, 2009

There are a multitude of options open to you in your culinary adventures with built in gas grills.  Once you have one, you can start to really experiment with the way you prepare food.  It won’t be long before your ideas about cooking will change, and you’ll start using words like “braise” and “marinate” in every day speech. You’ll also be a the envy of the neighborhood, responsible for making all the mouth-watering smells that have everyone wondering.

Fortunately, the grills are easy enough for anyone to use, and can certainly turn any meal into something special and extraordinary.  But for those who are willing to venture out past their culinary expectations, these grills really start to perform to make the work of world-class chefs.  One of the techniques that marks a seasoned griller is the art of searing.  There are some really good sources of basic information on searing on the web, and a basic description is usually enough to make someone want to try it.

The basic idea is that the meat, or seafood, is cooked at a high temperature on both sides.  This is pretty short, and generally the meat is then cooked at a lower temperature for a longer period of time, to complete the process.  It sounds complicated, but with these grills, it’s really not.  With so much cooking space and variation available, it’s simple enough to adjust one temperature very high, and another set at a medium level.  The grilling will give a nice flavor through the center, but the initial searing will give the meat a nice smoky flavor.  Searing is said to seal in the moisture, and although that’s not technically true, it tastes like it.  Another fantastic side effect of searing is that it makes the outside a different texture than the inside, and the difference to the palette  is stunning.

Patio Garden grilling

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

As we become more urbanized as a nation the back yards get smaller and smaller; there is less property to plant gardens or make room for built in grills. In some cases, a small patio only has a dirt patch or strip surrounding the patio. There is a lot of potential for a small space. So, making a plan for the perfect garden, the perfect sized grill and fitting it all in a patio will help make the best use of a small space and a place where you really want to spend time.

People with small patios may not have the extra money to hire someone to landscape a garden or build in a grill. This doesn’t mean that people have to endure with less of a garden patio for entertaining purposes. When facing the fact that a person only has a limited amount to spend, take the time to research and read as well as look online for how other people managed to create a fabulous urban patios. Look at the plants they used, find out about the plants hardiness and what kind of light each plant needs. See what brands of built in grill they used and what size fit in the best for the amount of cooking they needed to do. This seems simple enough, and it is because the research you do is exactly what a designer or contractor will do.

For the perfect garden patio design, make sure that the arranging of the space all comes together for a nice look and easy of use. For instance, taller plants or shrubs at the back is preferable. Make the spot where the built in grill is well ventilated and the furthest away from the house. Oh, the final touch will be a potted plant here and there, maybe a standing fountain and a patio furniture that will not take up much room. Once the garden is established and the grill is in place only happiness can be the result, plus knowing it was all done by you.

Famous Locksmiths

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

Locks have been around for 4,000 years, since the Assyrians first used a primitive form of pin lock. Over the millenia, a number of locksmiths have earned fame for innovations and improvements in lock mechanisms. While the ancient inventors and locksmiths are lost in time, some of the innovators of the last 800 years are documented in lock history.

While many of the famous locksmiths in recent years are American, ancient locksmiths were found throughout Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. One of the earliest surving documents about locks is the 1309 description of a combination lock. Written by Al-Jazari it is believed to be the first working combination lock.

In more recent times, a double-acting tumbler lock was patented in 1778 by Robert Barrion. It is considered the first modern lock improvement that increased lock security. In 1784 the first safety lock was patented by Joseph Bramah. This lock was believed to be unpickable for almost 70 years. It was finally proved pickable by A.C. Hobbs, though it took him over fifty hours to do so.

Jeremiah Chubb revolutionized locks by creating a detector lock in 1818. This was the first lock that couldn’t be opened by a skeleton key and Chubb earned a prize from the government who had long sought such a device.

One of the most successful locksmiths was James Sargeant. In addition to designing the first key-changeable combination lock that actually worked (in 1857), he patented a time lock mechanism in 1873 that became the prototype for many bank vault locks.

Other famous locksmiths include Samuel Segal with the first jimmy proof lock and Harry Soref who patented a padlock made of laminated steel in 1924. Then there are Linus Yale, Sr., and Linus Yale, Jr. who improved pin tumbler and combination locks.

Today there are locks for door, windows, safes, vault, and various types of property. Child safety locks, bicycle locks, and even book locks can be found in many homes. Electronic locks have been developed that use keypads, key cards or biometric readers to activate a locking mechanism for higher security. All of these are built upon the work of locksmiths from earlier times.

Installing a New Kitchen

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Building a new kitchen requires some pre planning. Look around at magazines, books, TV shows and on the Web to find out what your options are and what interests you. You may also want to visit a UK kitchens store or store in your own country.

The first step is to assess what you need. This is also the time to determine whether you should build a new kitchen or remodel your old one. There are advantages to both. A big influence on this will be your budget. Brainstorm on what you want in your kitchen, decide what is necessary and start a wish list too. Now look at the money you wish to spend. Its very easy for these projects to run over budget. Additional costs are unavoidable however you should attempt to control them.

Before you begin work again consider the worth of hiring one of the North East Kitchen Companies. A professional can really help to simplify everything including the cost.

You are now at the stage when you can begin your design. Look at some kitchen design books to get ideas and to avoid problems with your design. This is also a good time to assess the size of your kitchen so that you can maximize its potential. Also look at the shape of your kitchen as this can greatly influence your design.

Other considerations include whether you will have an eat-in kitchen. This can be informal using the counter top, or building a breakfast nook or having the traditional kitchen table. If you have the space a kitchen island can expand your counter top area as well as extra storage areas and the possibility of add an extra sink, dishwasher etc.

Free Time Leads to New Window Blinds

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

I was playing around on the web the other day when I ran across a Next Day Blinds video. I fell in love with the interior decorating that was shown. I love blinds and window treatments more than most people do. I guess that is because keeping the cool air inside during the hot summer months is such a priority.

I decided to get new window blinds for my kitchen after that. I got honeycomb blinds that are off-white. They do a great job of keeping the sun out and keeping it cool. They also look very sharp. I was so inspired by this that I am now going to do my entire house.

I want bamboo interior window blinds for my bedroom. I have an Asian bedspread and the bamboo will accent it perfectly.

It just amazes me to think that browsing around led to all of this. I wonder what I’ll do if I run across an interior rug commercial…

Daughter Inspired by Next Day Blinds

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

My mother is getting older and I try to make her life as easy as possible. One of the things that I have done for her is to make things that hurt the arthritis in her hands easier for her to maneuver.

I got her motorized window blinds from Next Day Blinds. This seems to help her because she no longer has to grip the string on her vertical blinds, squeeze and pull. This task sounds easy but for someone with this painful affliction, it can be very painful.

I also did some interior decorating on the rest of her house all the while making it safer for her. I put area rugs down throughout the house and I made sure that they won’t slip.

I got some of my decorating ideas when I spoke with the people from Next Day Blinds. For the bedroom interior design I got new window treatments that compliment her bedspread.

I think that overall these small changes will make her life easier and her house prettier.
