Reliable Download Programs

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

There are a number of great programs on the internet , but it can be hard to find the one you want to use. Making sure that you have a good site to go to for downloading programs is very important. If you are using a site that is unreliable, it can not only be hard to find the program that you want to download, it can also be hard on your computer system. A good download program will not install any viruses onto your system when you download a program. Some of them will even screen software that they offer before they allow others to download it.

There are some sites out there that are not as safe. Some of them will let you know that they are not as safe, while others will just let you download anything willy nilly. One of the best ways to see if a site is safe to download from is to see what their requirements are for uploading your own programs into the site. If they accept anyone’s submissions and it does not say that they will be tested first, you may want to refrain from downloading from them. If however they don’t accept uploads from anyone, you can feel a little bit safer.

Betty White Wowed SNL Audiances

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

There has been a Facebook campaign to get Betty White to host SNL. She finally did it and she was one of the best hosts they have had in a long time. Here is her opening speech. It was pretty funny.

Pittsburgh has a Love Hate with Ben Roethlisberger

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

Ben Roethlisberger is the talk of the town right now in Pittsburgh, but not everyone is in love with him. He is getting a lot of publicity, ending up on South Park, in rap songs, and even has stores opening up in his honor, but certainly not for the right reasons. His deviant behavior lately is actually the cause of all the sensation. It brings in revenue however and as Pittsburgh being his home town it is no wonder that this is where a lot of the commotion is happening.

Lady Gaga Ballet

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

There are some things you think to yourself should not be tried to be changed into something else. Until this video I felt that way about Lady Gaga. Actually going into this video I thought it was going to be bad, but as far as a ballet scene set to Lady Gaga music goes, they channeled her very well. If she could she would have done the dance the same way.

Siobhan Magnus’s Elimination Comes As Surprise

Friday, April 30th, 2010

It was a surprise to almost everyone when Siobhan Magnus was eliminated from American Idol on Wednesday night. This was supposed to be a “girl’s season” and the deck was heavily stacked in favor of the females, with a number of talented women who were each picked off early in the show. For most Idol experts Siobhan wasn’t even on the list of possible contestants to be asked to leave next, so this came as a major surprise for America.

All New Google Docs

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Google Docs has had a complete overhaul, and is now looking better than ever. Instead of me explaining it though, you should check out this article where someone else has already done it.

The Relativity Song

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

If you are a geek, as so many people on the internet are these days, you may find the great amusement in this. The graphics aren’t great, but the voice is, and the lyrics are amusing and true. Best of all it is a great way to explain the theory of relativity to anyone.

Q&A on Twitter Ads

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Twitter will now have paid tweets appear higher up in search results. Although we may not see them at first because the start of the project is aimed at less than 10% of their users, and you may not see them at all unless you do a search, or someone you follow if the advertiser, or retweets it. It will look in all ways like a normal tweet for now. All the same, some users are in a tizzy, so here is a nice Q&A I found useful.

Doctor Who: The Eleventh Hour

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

It came out in Britain on Sunday, but here in America we have to wait until the 17th still, which is why this little notice is placed right in between. Something of a compromise between the two air dates. All the same you can read all the juicy details and the newly formed love hate relationship with the changes that have been made to Doctor Who at one of the many fan site reviews. If you don’t want spoilers I suggest you wait until the 17th though, because this is a full on analysis of the first show with the Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith and his newest companion.

Gaming a Bigger Boon to Society than Previously Thought

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

It looks like video game engineers have a little more to teach us than just how to have some fun.It can also teach us what we are afraid us, without putting us in a situation where we have to face any real danger. Or at least the next generation of gaming will be able to. The full story is on NPR.

Getting to Know Wind Turbines

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

If you are one of those people who doesn’t have a clue when it comes to how electricity is generated, then this information is for you. Electricity comes in many forms and there are many sources of electricity also. Starting to become the most popular source of electricity is the wind. Wind is a very clean form to produce mechanical power, which is a key factor for generating electricity.

How we can get wind to work for us is creating a wind turbine that functions opposite of the way a household fan works. Household fans use electricity to generate wind, and a wind turbine uses wind to make electricity. A standard wind turbine consists of the generator, shaft and blade, which is all strategically placed to catch the wind that will then turn the blade. The turning of the blades triggered the shaft and once this continuous action begins, started by the wind, the generator, which is connected to the shaft will produce electricity. This electricity can give out the same quality of electrical power as the electricity found from other sources.

There are two classifications of wind turbines, the horizontal axis design and the vertical axis design. The horizontal wind turbine has three blades and functions best when directly facing the wind. On the other hand, the vertical wind turbine is designed like an egg-beater, invented by a French man named Darrieus. Farmers or rural homesteads with a good amount of land, found out how to bring in another source of income, by leasing their land to power developers. Since then, wind farms have cropped up all throughout the Midwest and in the West.

Designs is not the only variation for the wind turbines, there size is also a factor. There are really large wind turbines, those are the ones you’ll see at a wind farm, and they serve as the primary source of electricity in the electrical grid by producing a few megawatts. The smaller turbines usually produce lower than 100 kilowatts of electricity and are most often found in the residential areas. They are good for water pumping needs and other small tasks.

To find out more about the efficacy of a wind turbine, go to your local utilities website and there you will find just how wind is changing things for the better.

Halloween in New York City

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

Halloween.  It is a festival, a holiday, a celebration that throughout history, has crossed the boundaries of cultural traditions,  and has served to link generations together with the spooky nature of it all, handed down by our grandfathers.  Grandfathers do tell the most spooky of stories after all.  It is about all that in life that catches one, unaware.  It causes one to perhaps question their beliefs, or maybe just to question who may be hiding along the trash bins in the alley.  It conjures up images of ghouls, ghosts and monsters and witches.

The word “hallow” means sanctify.  Sanctify is such a heavenly word, so why the ghosts and the witches?  It is because it is truly a celebration for the dead.  For ancestors or for relatives that have passed into the other world, the other realm of existence.  It is a holiday meant to honor them.  It has now become more, or less than, a religious holiday, and has transpired into what has become one of the most favorite festivals around the world.

Regardless of most religious beliefs, people celebrate in grand style, with costumes and merriment and a bit of innocently intentioned, wicked behavior.  Should one find themselves lucky enough to be staying in one of the five star New York hotels such as the Tribeca Grand Hotel on this night, be prepared for the celebration of the Extravaganza & the Procession of Ghouls.  This is one of the most celebrated of traditions in New York, a procession, in which everyone is invited to participate, that begins at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine.

This annual event begins with the screening of a silent horror film, complete with the creepy organ accompaniment, and all in attendance is decked out in the most outrageous of ghoulish and ghastly costumes.  The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari was shown in 2004, and the Phantom of the Opera-the 1928 version of the film was shown in ’05.  Ralph Lee is the organist who accompanies the silent films, and also happens to be the man who staged the original Procession of Souls.  The feeling is creepy, and ghostly, and fun.  Definitely one the best times to visit the city of Manhattan.

Leaving a part of me in Dorset

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Yet another day of travel. This day is for touring the county called Dorset. Located in the Southern part of England along the seaside. We were so tired from our trip yesterday in the port town, Poole, we took our time about waking up this morning in our Dorset Hotel room. While my husband was taking a shower, I went for a run through a most pleasant forest named Wareham. It was a gorgeous day, the sun was peaking through the trees, the trees provided enough shade which cooled a soft breeze going through the forest. Yes, a nice run.

Not only did I notice that the forest was amazing, I really can’t describe it, I wish I had brought my camera with me. The paths with which I could choose from were too numerous, some were wide, enough for runners, bikers and walkers, other paths were very narrow, just enough room for one person at a time. I decided to be random in my path choices which lead me running through incredible hills right into the heart of the forest. I was in the midst of wines and heathers. Purple heathers surrounded me, I was running through a carpet of heavenly heather. I didn’t want to leave the forest, I felt like I was on an adventure, like the Hobbits in the Lord of the Rings. But, I knew if I didn’t head back, my husband would call a search party.

Coming back into the hotel room, my husband had a nice breakfast waiting for me, this really helped me love him even more than before. I told him all about my run while we ate. After breakfast, we drove on to our next destination. But, my soul is still back in the Wareham forest. I think there must have been a magical spell cast upon the forest way back when, which captures a part of ones soul, so if you have to leave the forest, a part of the forest goes with you.

Red Hot Chili Peppers in Concert

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Red Hot Chili Peppers are blisteringly hot onstage. They are an American funk rock band that formed in Los Angels in 1983. They are known for their concert performances and onstage antics, which at one time featured the band members appearing onstage wearing nothing but a gym sock, and it was not on one of their feet. They are also known for their frequent improvisation playing during their shows. This is standard aspect of their music and contributes to the vibrant dynamic in their sound. Some of their early shows were completely composed of improve, and it has become a signature aspect of their style. Most of their ticketed concerts still end with an extended improvisation, which is usually expanded from the song Give it Away.

The Chili Peppers have become one of the unofficial representatives of Southern California and many of their songs focus on Los Angeles and the state. Under the Bridge is one of those. It was their first mainstream hit and hit number two on the Billboard Top 100. The song was written by singer and writer Anthony Kiedis and expresses the singer’s bond with the city of Los Angeles. He has stated he wrote it during a period of feeling isolated and alone, and his at the time the city itself felt like his only friend. He had been sober for 3 years, and as usually happens he couldn’t participate in the same things with the same people he used to.

Californication is the Chili Pepper’s seventh studio album and was released in 1999. It was an instant success and has sold over 15 million copies throughout the world. This is also their highest selling album, and put the band in another league of stardom. The album contained the songs Scar Tissue, Otherside, and the song Californication, which is also the album title. In 2000 Scar Tissue won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.

Sea World Adventures

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Sea World, California, Shamu, other fabulous sea creatures. When you picture Sea World, all kinds of images form in your mind. The beauty of these wonderfully mysterious underwater mammals is so entertaining and fascinating to us. Wouldn’t you love to know, really know the depth of their intelligence? What about their souls, their feelings? The whales, the dolphins, the porpoises, all of them have been trained to respond to their handlers and they are there for our entertainment. But these marvelous creatures are so much more than mere learned behavior and responses. What a thrill it must be as a handler to experience first hand the incredible bond between human and mammal. You can peer into their impelling eyes and be drawn into their very being. The trust that is given to the human is incredible and hopefully never ill deserved.

Millions of people from all over the world make San Diego, California their destination so they can get event tickets and visit Sea World. It’s almost like walking into a whole different dimension of life when you get up close and personal with these exceptional creatures. You sit there on the bleachers with other visitors, all with growing anticipation, knowing full well you will probably be drenched from one or more of the huge splashes that come from a tail or fin, but that’s ok, that’s part of the thrill of it all. Being able to actually touch one of these beautiful animals is amazing. But for me, it’s the eyes. It’s almost like they can read our minds, knowing what we are thinking; and believing in us, believing we will do no harm. How they can communicate with humans, creating this bond of deep friendship and love is beyond me. I don’t know how, I just believe it does exist. And I also believe that is what draws so many people from so many places, every year, to capture a little piece of this unique mystery for themselves.

Taking a Hawaii vacation

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

What really could be better than a vacation right about now? Not much right? A vacation where the only thing you really have to pack is a bikini and a cover up. Something where you lounge all day and eat and drink all night.

I just love those vacations where you get up in the morning, put on your swim suit and then lay your day away drinking boat drinks. Only to shower in the night, just in time to make it for dinner. Hoping that you don’t get too sunburned during the day. That is what Hawaii can offer you. And now is the time to think about going, because it is really more affordable than you could ever even dream of right now.

Because the economy is slow, vacations are more affordable than ever. The plane seats still need to be filled, and those cruise ships still need to cruise. But because everyone is cutting back on their budget, there are more seats available than ever for that Hawaii holiday. And I’m talking top destinations at Kauai hotels and other great places to stay on the islands.

If you want to get a really amazing deal, try booking far in advance, or making it an impromptu trip. Sites like Expedia do all the work for you and help you find vacation packages, so that your flight and hotel are booked together for one great stress free vacation.

There is still a need to shop around though. Try calling places you want to stay directly. Sometimes they will give you a better rate over the phone and you won’t have to pay your entire total until you check out, just a simple deposit. Deposits are usually about half of the overall total.

So, if you need to get away, think about going somewhere more exotic than you thought you could afford, because you just might be able to now!

KLite Buskers

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

When it comes to luxury hotels, Kuala Lumpur has some of the finest in the region.  KL is a “primate city,” which means that it is at least twice as large as its largest nearby city, making it a hub of urban culture in the region.  Gorgeous surroundings, both natural and cityscape, immediately put the visitors in a state of relaxation, and the good life is always here, always now.  The hotels are a mirror of the place, where a warm spirit of generosity runs through all we do, and we believe that regeneration of the mind and spirit are necessary not just on vacations, but every day.  There is an exquisite sense of taste in the hotels, where the design is world-class, and the ambience is divinely Malaysian.

The city is a rich blend of many cultures and languages, and visitors can spend hours just people-watching.  But there is so much more to do!  With fabulous restaurants featuring cuisines from around the world (but the local is truly fantastic!), night clubs that have some of the best beats in the region, and excellent shopping, there is a vivaciousness here that everyone will appreciate.  As you tour the city, you might notice high concentrations of street performers in certain areas.  If you do come across this, and you like the talent you see, be sure to drop some money in the hat.  The official name for this kind of performing is “busking,” and there are buskers all over the world.  In fact, in 2006, Kuala Lumpur hosted an International Buskers Festival.

This festival featured artists from all over the world, and they performed in seven different venues for five hours every day for nine days in a row.  This event was a big success, and not only helped bring attention to KL’s lively scene, but also highlighted the Buskers Festivals in other parts of the world.  Performers played music, did skateboard tricks, acrobatics, body art, circus acts, and all kinds of performance art to sometimes baffled and always interested crowds.  Tipping was done in the traditional fashion, by dropping money in the hat, only this time all the proceeds went to local charities.  It was a unique event in a very unique city, and for the rest, you’ll have to come and see it for yourself!

Dubai Activities

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Dubai is the most heavily populated city of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates. Sitting on the Persian Gulf, the major economic contributions for this city come from tourism, real estate and financial services. Tourists come from all over the world to experience Dubai. If you are wild and crazy, you will love Dubai. If you are quiet and shy, you will love Dubai. You will find out of the ordinary, exhilarating activities that test your physical prowess and courage. Or, you can just find a quiet, secluded area on one of the many beautiful and serene beaches not too far from the city to read, rest and reflect. One thing is certain, the five star hotels Dubai UAE offers will definitely be an experience all its own to enjoy and relish. The amenities are unbelievable, and the service is fabulous. You will certainly be spoiled during your stay.

As for something different, there is camel racing. This has become a very popular spectator sport in Dubai, with 15 racetracks featuring over 14,000 racing camels. There are over 9,000 handlers taking care of these camels. October thru April is the typical racing season, so if you are in Dubai at that time, be sure and put camel racing on your agenda.

If you would rather do than see, are you daring enough for a tandem sky dive? A definite heart pounding sport, you will dive from around 12,000 feet, attached to another jumper. Or if you are really daring, you can experience the free fall. Or how about a hot air balloon ride? Go up at sunrise and view the spectacular view of the Hajj Mountains. Prefer to keep your feet on the ground? What about surfing, or take a desert safari trip, charter a boat to do some fishing or just enjoy the beautiful sights. Whatever you are looking for, you’re sure to find it at Dubai.

Hottubs and Good Scents in the Desert

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Many people in the city of Phoenix are taking steps to cut down on their usage of water, for both economic and environmental reasons.  Maintaining large swimming pools and and large lawns requires the constant filling of the pool due to evaporation, and the constant watering of the lawn due to the high temperatures and the dry weather conditions.  Also, due to the more clay like consistency of the ground in the desert, most species used to plant yards and golf courses requires the use of inorganic and chemical fertilizers.

In current times, many are making a few decisions differently, opting to install smaller hottubs rather than large swimming pools, and choosing to plant species of trees and plants that are native to the desert environment in which we live.  Hottubs do require care and maintenance, but are not so labor intensive as pools.  The remain covered when not in use, which has two obvious benefits.  One being that the leaves and dirt that can fall into and wreak havoc on the filters of swimming pools, especially during the monsoon season, are kept out of the hottubs.  And secondly, the cover prevents some of the evaporation of the water that requires most pool owners, hours of refilling the pools each morning.

The choice to switch out lawns for plants indigenous to the environment not only cuts down on labor as well, but is more ecologically sound, reducing water usage and taking away the necessity for the use of chemical fertilization.  Many plant gardens with the sense of sight in mind, which is one of the elementary and important concerns, however there are many plants of the desert that also smell incredibly great.  Many are opting to plant ornamental grass throughout their yards, species that do not require feeding or cutting, along with some of the various good scented trees and flowers.  There are many to choose from such as jasmine vines or one of the species of sage plants.  Creosote bushes and Acacia trees are also wonderful options, all of which smell lovely after an early morning desert rain.  This is the perfect time to grab a cup of coffee and to relax in a backyard hottub before beginning the day.

Patio Garden grilling

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

As we become more urbanized as a nation the back yards get smaller and smaller; there is less property to plant gardens or make room for built in grills. In some cases, a small patio only has a dirt patch or strip surrounding the patio. There is a lot of potential for a small space. So, making a plan for the perfect garden, the perfect sized grill and fitting it all in a patio will help make the best use of a small space and a place where you really want to spend time.

People with small patios may not have the extra money to hire someone to landscape a garden or build in a grill. This doesn’t mean that people have to endure with less of a garden patio for entertaining purposes. When facing the fact that a person only has a limited amount to spend, take the time to research and read as well as look online for how other people managed to create a fabulous urban patios. Look at the plants they used, find out about the plants hardiness and what kind of light each plant needs. See what brands of built in grill they used and what size fit in the best for the amount of cooking they needed to do. This seems simple enough, and it is because the research you do is exactly what a designer or contractor will do.

For the perfect garden patio design, make sure that the arranging of the space all comes together for a nice look and easy of use. For instance, taller plants or shrubs at the back is preferable. Make the spot where the built in grill is well ventilated and the furthest away from the house. Oh, the final touch will be a potted plant here and there, maybe a standing fountain and a patio furniture that will not take up much room. Once the garden is established and the grill is in place only happiness can be the result, plus knowing it was all done by you.

Get into a hot tub, hey!

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

What is it about a hot tub? They evoke relaxation and a kind of luxury that normal folks can only seem to get when they go on vacation. And normally it’s the gross hot tub at the Super 8 motel, but hey I’ll take a little bit of luxury wherever I can get it.

Saturday Night Live has been making fun of the hot tub and the people who love them for almost 20 years now. Remember when Eddie Murphy used to impersonate James Brown on his talk show that took place in a hot tub? That is super classic. “It’s too hot in the hot tub!”

And again later with Will Ferrell and Rachel Dratch as the hot tubing couple who like to call each other “lova.”

Well now more people than ever are having that same type of luxury in their own homes.

Hot tubs are a great way to relax, especially in this hectic world we live in where there is barely enough time to think about what to eat for dinner.

Some people who live in states where it is acceptable to have a pool in their back yard choose to make a hot tub part of their pool when they remodel. But, most people in the United States don’t have that kind of luck. So they have to turn to above ground hot tubs and Jacuzzis. But finding one that you like can be difficult, especially if you are looking online.

Steve Barbarich ran into this problem a while back. He was in the market for a portable spa Jacuzzi and was looking into retailers online. Too bad none of them had any sort of customer service standards. So Steve decided he would start his own website to fill the void of what he thought was poor customer service and it has worked out fairly well so far.

No matter what you decide, a hot tub is a worthy investment!

The Warehouse Club

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Five-star Dubai hotels are featured in every daydream of travelers who have set foot here and had the pleasure of enjoying the luxurious accommodations and world-class service that are provided. The food and atmosphere are beyond compare as the finest chefs in the world compete with some of the most gracious taste-makers who work behind the scenes to design a perfect travel experience. The same taste-makers and trend-setters are at work in the urban landscape, and there are pockets of culture that are turning up here. It’s become a hot spot for world culture and the locals are treated to some of the most interesting performers in the region, competing for a moment to make their art public.

The music scene has been fascinating to watch recently. There is an influx of musicians, new transplants, expat kids who are suddenly grown up, and die-hard locals who love the city because it’s home, and want to make something audible happen in the streets. Recently too there has been a rise in the number of music festivals, and as expected, a rise in music venues. One such venue that has its fingers on the musical pulse here is The Warehouse Club, Le Meridien Dubai. In its infancy still, this club is participating in some very tasty music festivals, and it would appear that the owners are very hip on what’s happening locally. Musicians are always lamenting the dearth of places to play, and Dubai city is perhaps even more difficult to find an artistic home, but this is exactly what The Warehouse is offering. Taking part in both Global Sound Stage and Slob Fest, and also mixing up the musical menu with live jazz on Tuesday nights, there is something for a number of musical tastes here, and this is a gift to both audiences and musicians.

The Warehouse is also a top shelf restaurant. The setting is beautiful, extremely classy and architecturally fascinating, a real designer’s heaven. There is also a sophisticated and delicious menu that features Euro-style fusion cuisines, in a European café setting. All this in a desert landscape, and the easy blend of culture and creature comfort make this life a very pleasant dream.

Surfing Off the Cape, South Africa

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Many surfers have commented throughout the years, that the Peninsula of Cape Town has some of the best surf beaches.  That in the waters of the Atlantic off the coast, the waves are always easy to find.  There are so many fine surfing spots, that it does matter the direction the wind may be blowing, somewhere it will be blowing in the right direction off the shore.  Many of the best Capetown restaurants are located along the surf beaches, and there is nothing better than some nice food and relaxation after a day on the waves.  In these well known surf spots though, as in any surf towns be it Bondi Beach in Australia or Malibu Beach in California, USA, local surf spots mean that one must show respect and gain respect of the local surfers.  And as far as shark attacks go, this has not been a factor off the Peninsula.  There have been reports of great whites, but at this time, there have been no attacks.

That being said, the best spots for surfing are all located to the north and to the south of the city.  There are a few spots located in the area of Muizenberg.  The best spots to the north are Table View, Blouberg, and Big Bay.  Derde Steen is a spot however, the waves do come in very big and are more suited for beginners.  Blouberg is really the hot spot, if Blouberg is crowed then Table View is the next best place.  Most all of the spots at Blouberg are surf-able, but wet suits are necessary as the temperature of the water is fairly cold year round.  The waves here tend to be much more intense than they look, breaking often times close to the shore.  Big Bay, just next door is one of the best spots, always with big waves and relatively mild water temperatures.  Surfing in South Africa will provide one with a love of the sport, many memories and just incredible amounts of good times.

Dubai Marina and Deira Clocktower

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Dubai is a vibrant city and full of cultural landmarks and historic buildings. There is a thriving arts scene and a progressive cosmopolitan feel to this major UAE city. Visiting the city as a tourist can be an extremely enlightening and exciting event as the food, entertainment, and general scenic views are unique and inviting to Westerners. Two the major landmarks that most tourists will not want to miss are the Dubai Marina and also the Deira Clocktower. Guests staying in five star hotels in Dubai should have no difficulty in finding information on these and other major landmarks of the city.

The Deira Clocktower is also commonly referred to as the Dubai Clocktower. It is a roundabout located in the Al Rigga area of Deira at the intersection of Umm Hurair Road and Route D 89. It is the major landmark of Deira and also provides access to the Al Maktoum Bridge, which was the first land crossing to be constructed between Bur Dubai and Deira. The Clocktower was built in 1964 and throughout the years suffered from corrosion and the steal reinforcements began to crack and deteriorate. It was refurbished in 1972 and stands a major landmark of Dubai.

The Dubai Marina is a residential district and is commonly considered to be the heart of the new Dubai. It was designed and developed to be a model of the Concord Pacific Place along False Creek in Vancouver, BC, Canada. It has been developed by the UAE real estate firm Emaar Properties and is entirely man made. When completed, the marina will include some 200 high rise buildings and sky scrapers. Among them are the Infinity Tower, The Princess Tower, Marina Terrace, and the Torch Dubai Marina. Also included are the residential towers. When it is completed, it will be the largest man made marina in the world. Marina del Ray in California, USA is currently the largest man made marina.

Dubai Festival

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

The Dubai Festival for Youth Theatre is aimed toward the recognition of young talent and supporting the development and education of young people who are involved in the performing arts. Last year’s festival took place under the patronage of Sheikh Majed and included a final evening gala celebrating the exceptional performers, directors and playwrights. Tourists who visit the UAE and stay in one of the five star hotels Dubai often seek out these fabulous cultural activities. Festivals such as this provide an excellent opportunity to experience the contemporary social and cultural lifestyle of the UAE.

The ten day festival had the dual purpose of launching the UAE’s young talent pool and also serving as an exceptional summer entertainment event for audiences. It is recognized as one of the premiere platforms for young practitioners to hone their skills and receive acknowledgment for their efforts at the regional and national level. This also prepares them for the highly competitive aspect of the professional theatre industry, in which they will be working. The performing arts plays an essential role in the lifestyle and cultural basis of the AUE and celebrating the up and comers in the field is paramount. The festival has become a central component of raising the profile of performing arts in the country.

Last year’s awards were presented by Mohammed Al Murr, the Vice Chairman of the DCAA. The festival was held at the Cultural and Scientific Association located in DubaiCs Al Mamzar area. Every night of the festival a new play was presented which led to the final evening’s award celebration. There was a tie for the award for Best Director between Marwan Abulla, who directed Anambar at the Dubai Al Ahil Theater, and Hamad Abdulrazaq, who directed Al Sitarah at the Sharjah National Theater. Jasim Al Kharraz won the award for Best Playwright for his play Zaman Al Youm, Dubai Folklore. The award for Best Actress went to Bedour and the award for Best Actor went to Hussain Yousef.

Star Sighting

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

There was a car chase scene in the beginning of the Bourne Supremacy, which started at Palolem Beach, cut straight to Panjim and then to Nerul Bridge where Jason Bourne’s love interest lost control of the jeep, crashed and drowned.  The business in the town of Panjim was taken over by Hollywood for three days as the film was shot. It was a bit of an inconvenience, but was also a novelty.   The following year, the thirty fifth international film festival of India was held in Goa. Prior to the festival, Goa experienced a facelift. The main streets and buildings around the city were fixed up. The riverbank gained a promenade.  New and expensive decorative street lighting was added. At the arrival gate of the festival’s man venue, temporary lighting was installed at great expense to the town. International stars were set to grace the town and its residents with their presence for the Indian version of Cannes.   Over 150 films from 55 countries were shown during the festival. While it was a smashing success for the IFFI, the population of Goa may have seen it differently. Some thought it was a total waste of money, yet were flattered by the report it gave the town.

There have been talks that the International Film Festival of India would make Goa a permanent location for the event.  This created uproar in the general tourist population, given that the five star hotels Goa would now cost a small fortune. With the threat of Bollywood and other international stars giving the town an unwelcome sheen, many have considered traveling elsewhere for vacation.  Fortunately, if you travel either far north or far south of Panjim, you will find many reasonable accommodations and more importantly, a respite from the hustle & bustle of city life. Goa, which has always been known by its carefree, unpretentious attitude, would like to remain that way.

Indulging in Relaxation: Night and Day in Singapore

Friday, April 17th, 2009

The population of Singapore’s middle class has becoming accustomed to their economic security, and thus, spending more money on the enjoyment of life. Some choose to do so, in any number of the discos, or clubs or pubs which are increasing in number and variety. For just as this younger generation is growing and spending more, so is the number of popular new nights spots and restaurants growing. Hot spots are taking on a bit more of a groovy tone, as in some of the new cigar bars, or pool halls. And as is also true in the more metropolitan cities in the United States, wine bars are becoming increasingly more popular.

One famous street in Singapore offers up a variety of night time entertainment is Orchard Road. During the daytime this is a popular market place. But at night, the pulse and heartbeat changes a bit. There are many bars, karaoke clubs, and discos, however the Orchard Road has much to offer on the sidewalks of the street. There are many open-air markets during the night time, and they are vibrant with the performances of the street musicians, the Chinese Opera Shows, puppet shows and Singapore Symphony Orchestra. This city is like a carnival, of sights and sounds, and flavors when the sun sets.

The residents also value their down time during the day, the time to pamper and to tend to the physical body and bring serenity to the mind. Singapore best spas offer services that include massage, aromatherapy, acupuncture and detoxification. Sometimes necessary after a night out on the town. Many spas are in garden settings, which serve a few purposes. For not only are these setting instrumental in the entire experience many of the ingredients used for aromatherapy and the detox face and body masks are taken straight from these gardens. Most of the spas combine the various treatments, or exercise such as Pilates or yoga, with the natural world. Many days are spent integrating walks through the parks or gardens with classes, massage, and the healthy cuisine of the vegetarian restaurants. So all in all, whether it be day or night, there is a variety of ways to relieve stress and unwind for the citizens of the city, and for the tourists visiting for just that reason.

The Beautiful Sentosa Island

Monday, April 6th, 2009

One island just a quarter of a mile off the coast of mainland Singapore, is the island of Sentosa, apply named as the word means tranquility and peace in the Malay language. This name change was requested by the people of the island in 1972, as the translation for the name previously, was the Island of Death from Behind. Quite easy to understand the locals desire for the name change. An expressway built in 1992 links the island to the mainland and makes travel between the two extremely convenient. More than seventy percent of Sentosa is made up of the secondary rain-forest, and many local Singaporeans travel to the island for the resorts and the beaches, and the, well peace and tranquility. The government and many private corporations have invested millions of dollars in the development of the island over the years, creating what has become a very desirable tourist destination for international travelers. There are many attractions that make this island perfect for family get-aways, as well as miles of white sand beaches and local flora and fauna which make out-door exploring and hiking an experience like no other. The resorts and Singapore luxury hotels are among the most extravagant in the country.

One of the more recent attractions to come to the island is the Universal Studios Theme Park, which offers a look into and tours and rides surrounding, some of the top that Hollywood, California has to offer in the entertainment industry. Families can spend days in this one park experiencing the many sites and exhibits. Another site very popular, a bit less congested, is the Tiger Sky Tower. This incredible lookout was opened in 2004 and provides the opportunity to view the mainland, the entire island of Sentosa, and the many islands surrounding. When the weather is clear it is also possible to see Indonesia as well as Malaysia from this tower over 130 meters over sea level. Over 50 species of butterflies are housed in the Butterfly Park, providing another very peaceful destination. More than fifteen thousand butterflies are on exhibit in an outdoor garden and conservatory. And for those with a little Jacques Cousteau in their soul, there is the Underwater World. The oceanarium opened on the western side of the island in 1991. The park is completely underground, or under water as it is, with a tunnel surrounded by glass windows that stretches over 80 meters. Visitors are also able to submerge themselves waist deep, and swim with the dolphins. Many spectacular opportunities are on this island, and they are all very much alive, with no ‘death coming from behind’.

National Day Parade of Singapore

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

Glittering parade floats and acrobat warriors, what causes more people to take to the streets is nothing other then the National Day Parade and celebration. This event boasts more than seven hundred performers. Showcases by various theater companies and universities trek down the streets provided a show rich and vibrant. The best Singapore restaurants serve food, the dancers dance and the singers sing. People from different international organizations and realms of the art world witness and partake in what is come to be known as a party of the grandest scale. Dragons and crouching tigers, and Miss Thailand 2009 make appearances that leave the crowd wanting and needing more. The first parade occurred in 1966, in celebration of Singapore’s gained independence from Malaysia. Illusions of magic, street dancing, food feasts and drinking are all part of the fun and joyous atmosphere. Members of high government attended the first ‘show’, with the prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew and others present there that day on the steps of city hall. Fireworks ring in the climax creating a night sky ‘Aurora Borealis’ in the Southern China night. Various people from various countries come together and may discover that not only to they not have such differences, but that the commonalities between races are something beautiful to behold and should forever continue to be-holden to the heart, of individuals and of societies as well.

Tickets are sometimes hard to come across, and people wander the streets looking for them. Not to know, perhaps, that the event is free of charge. Overcrowding may be a bit of a problem for some, the government mainly I suspect, but with the amazing talent performing at the event and the meaning behind it, one may conclude that this would be and could be a very good aspect of the parade. Singapore is a strict place to live, and I suspect…to travel to as well. And comfort of those in the ‘care’ of a controlling relationship is perhaps an issue worth resolving for those with their grand ideas of control, i.e. the leaders themselves. What started out as a simple neighborhood parade has come to mean much more to the people involved and has come to carry much more international weight. This grand event which sets Singaporeans onto the streets decked out in the most glamorous of style, dancing to the most exciting music pumped out by the famous DJ’s is about to bring forth the question that this island needs to ask, freedom or oppression. Perhaps next January, the prime minister will see life in a different, and more brightly colored and festive light.

Family Friendly Ibiza

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

The island of Ibiza is well known for late night parties and dance clubs. While this is a splendid way to spend a vacation for singles looking for that party, it may not be conducive to a family vacation. This island has many locations just outside of the main city, that are more relaxing and family friendly. Three very fine towns are Santa Eulalia, Puerto de San Miguel, and Es Cana.

What started out a major trading town, Santa Eulalia has become a favorite for family travelers. This is one Ibiza’s largest and wealthiest cities on the island. Trading was made possible and easily accessible due to the fact that the one river on the islands runs right through the middle of the town. Settlement began here during the Roman times and has continued to flourish. Many aspects of Santa Eulalia makes this a perfect location for families to enjoy. Museums illustrate the rich history of town, providing afternoons of entertainment for children, as well as adults. The idea of pirates is always exciting for kids, and the Puig de Missa is one spot they shouldn’t miss. This was a fort used as a lookout for pirates and is now one of the many museums where one can walk through to see artifacts and to listen to the historical tales of the pillaging marauders. There are also many cafes, and restaurants and 5 star Ibiza hotels as well, not all is of the historic nature. The beaches of Santa Eulalila offer up either relaxation or sport. True to the nature of the pristine sand and water of the whole island, one may take a relaxing walk while the kids partake in any one of the many activities on the water.

Another small, quaint and family friendly town is Puerto de San Miguel. This location has the added benefit of pine tree forests and hills set right up against the water, providing many opportunities for day hikes and picnics. Water skiing and sailing are just two of the many ways to enjoy this location, all the while with the benefit of the tranquility that sets it apart from the club-hopping reputation of the island. This has become a popular spot for families over the years. And while nature is what makes this city so peaceful, there are still many restaurants and shops and town squares. And should one desire a night out on the town, a bus runs on the weekends taking passengers to various club destinations.

Perhaps the most peaceful spot on the island is the town of Es Cana. There are many guided tours on this town, and while there are still opportunities for the various water sports, the beaches and the water surrounding this town are shallow and safe, providing fun for small children and relief for parents. There are many family friendly restaurants and cafes, and once a week there is an open air market where food, always food, and various homemade arts are sold. For the calm holidays and for the families still looking for adventure but wanting it to be away from the club scene, these three spots on the island offer various ways to experience the pleasure, without the chaos.
