A backyard oasis can be yours

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Families are probably spending more time at home these days. Bringing back old school things like game nights and other family bonding experiences are making a totally awesome comeback. And despite the fact that the economy is lagging, it could be doing great things for American families. When families spend more time together everyone tends to function on a better and healthier level together. And this of course is what families are for. With summer comes spending time outside. Whether that be catching lightening bugs or grilling on the bbq island.  There is nothing like having some outside fun to bring people together.

If you have found that you would like to get more out of your backyard experience then you should consider picking up a portable spa to add to your yard and list of family activities. There are even spas that are inflatable now and there are lots of two person hot tub varieties that you can purchase as well.

Another way to spruce up your backyard space and bring the family together is to purchase some sort of game or activity that everyone can play. If you have to room, a badminton net or volleyball net is a great way to bring the family and friends together at your place. Having this in your backyard is also a great way to keep your kids active without having to encourage them to. They will want to play and have their friends over to play as well.

Having a great backyard will bring you and your family and friends a sense of togetherness. Togetherness is just so great and exactly what everyone needs in these tough times. Make the most of your space and give at least one of these options a try! You are guaranteed to enjoy yourself with any of these options.

What is e-commerce?

Monday, July 27th, 2009

E-commerce stands for electronic marketing. Electronic commerce is buying and selling products over such things as the internet or other types of electronic or computer networks.

There are also several subsets of electronic commerce. There are things that exist entirely online. The services that these businesses provide are also entirely online. These can be things like web design services or search engine marketing services. Another example is accessing premium content on a website. This happens on such websites as the FOX News anchor Bill O’Reilly. He has people pay to access a certain part of his website.

Another type of e-commerce is in the form of online retailers. Any retailer that you can find in the mall, you can also probably find them online as well. But, the stores that are in the mall are not the ones just selling goods online. For example if you check out the website of Steve Barbarich, he sells hot tubs directly from his internet website.

Another term for retail business that is often used is e-tail, meaning electronic retail. This is referred to as business to consumer. This is what companies such as Amazon.com operates in. Generally, all online shopping is a form of electronic commerce.

E-commerce and the meaning have roots from before the days of the internet. The term was first used to describe commercial transaction facilitation using technology called Electronic Funds Transfer. Also when it became more popular to use credit cards to make purchases instead of checks or cash that was also considered a form of e-commerce.

E-commerce has come a long way from the public accepting the daily use of an ATM machine to using the internet to shop for all of your Christmas presents. The internet has done truly amazing things to our society and how we shop and communicate.

Singapore’s Success in Anti-Corruption Policies

Friday, July 24th, 2009

The corruption on the island of Singapore is under constant control in the public and private sectors today.  The leaders of the country have been committed throughout the last two years, in their anti-corruption policies.  The laws created are proving to be sufficient in the deterrence of criminal acts of corruption, laws which apply to all members of the society, regardless of one’s ethnicity, religion, social status or political ties and affiliations.  This was not always the case for the country, but corruption was attacked in 2007, when the agencies that were organized to stop the corruption signed the Memorandum of Understanding.  Members of ASEAN include the Philippines, Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam.  All countries agreed to cooperate in order to stop corruption and to do their best to continue fighting the recurrence.  The first document of such was signed in 2004 in Indonesia, by Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia.  The wonderful aspect is that all those that sign are building mutual and enhanced strength in this ongoing task.

The signing of the document in 2007, was a momentous occasion and signified the beginning of a new chapter for the agencies in the countries that will only continue to advance the communication between the anti-corruption officers and agencies.  Previously in Singapore, in 1959, the government had an enormous task ahead of them.  Corruption was rampant in all of the sectors and the laws of the Corruption Ordinance were weak and insufficient.  Acts of corruption were not acts that were strongly punished, and thus the officers could not effectively attend to their obligations and duties.  Many of the officers themselves were corrupt as they were not well paid, and turned to corruption to support themselves and their families.  However much has changed in Singapore over the last few years, and the country stands testament to what can be accomplished when the agencies are thoroughly staffed with officers of the utmost integrity.

Cost of rehab

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

If there is someone in your life who has an addiction, it can be a difficult decision to decide where they should get help. An addiction treatment center can be a costly drain on an addict’s family.  According to the National Substance Abuse Treatment Services Survey, drug rehabilitation can cost around $7,000 a month.

And since addicts who stay in treatment longer have better success in staying sober, rehab can easily cost upwards of $10,000 to even $40,000, depending on the type of program and where it is located.

This financial burden is rarely picked up by the addict themselves. Most do not have the ability to pay for their treatment, so the family becomes the people who pick up the tab. Although, they might have been already supporting the addict if they are deep into addiction and unable to work and function. The hope is that the addict will become well again and be able to pay off their drug rehab.

Some drug rehabs and dual diagnosis treatment is publicly funded, but few are. Some people think that they can rely on their health insurance to pay for rehab. But most of the time this is not the case. Insurance companies will do what they can to pay for as little of the treatment as possible.  This is not usually an upfront payment either; insurance companies usually will reimburse a patient after they have paid for the rehabilitation out of their own pocket.

Another misconception about drug rehab is that you get what you pay for.  In most cases, that can be true, but there are treatment centers that cater to celebrities that can cost over $100,000 for a stay and the celebrity still ends up relapsing.  So if you are looking for rehab for yourself or a loved one, take into consideration what will work best for both of you.

What happens after gastric bypass surgery

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Gastric bypass surgery has quickly become one of the most common types of weight loss surgery in the United States.

The gastric bypass surgery creates a small pouch at the top of your stomach. The pouch, about the size of a walnut form there on after the surgery can only hold about an ounce of food.

The patient loses weight after having gastric bypass surgery because food that enters the new smaller stomach can basically bypass it, hence the name of the surgery and goes straight to the small intestine. By doing this, the body can absorb fewer calories and then the patient can lose weight.

After gastric bypass surgery the patient can expect to have to drastically change their eating habits. For the first three days after the surgery, the patient will not be able to eat. After that, your diet will follow a pattern for the next 12 weeks.

The patient starts with an all liquid diet, next is soft foods and then after that is regular foods.  For six months after the surgery the patient has to be careful not to eat too much or too fast because it could make them sick. The surgery may also result in having body aches, feeling cold or tired, dry skin, mood changes and hair loss or thinning.

The surgery should eventually reduce your weight by about fifty percent.

The cost of gastric bypass surgery can be quite staggering in the United States. Many are now turning to medical tourism based surgery for their weight loss surgery needs.

Gastric bypass abroad
based surgery can be significantly less expensive than having the surgery in the United States. Lap band surgery in Mexico , can be about half that of the cost in the United States.   Medical tourism in now considered a national industry in many countries and a viable option to having the surgery elsewhere. Gastric bypass is a surgery for highly specialized surgeon regardless of where it is performed, be prepared to deal with the effort needed for success afterwards.

Barcelona Athletes and Culture

Monday, July 20th, 2009

It has been seventeen years since the city of Barcelona took center stage in the world of amateur sports at the 1992 summer Olympics. Because the XXV Olympiad was the first year that professional athletes were permitted to compete, much of the focus was not on individual sports such as track and field, gymnastics, and diving, but rather on the team sport of basketball. With the likes of John Stockton, Karl Malone, Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippin representing Team U.S.A.’s self proclaimed “Dream Team,” the world traveled to Barcelona to witness history as Team U.S.A. made a seemingly easy and fast break towards an undefeated 8-0 run at the gold medal. Although Team Spain earned a mere ninth place ranking with a 3-4 record that year, Spanish athletes have emerged to the forefront of professional basketball in recent years earning strong representation for their country. Indeed players such as Pau Gasol of the world champion Los Angeles Lakers and Ricky Rubio, a native of Barcelona’s neighboring suburb of El Masnou, and the number five pick in the first round of the June NBA draft, have once again drawn the world’s attention to the country of Spain, and in particular historically and culturally significant cities such as Barcelona.

For visitors of Barcelona who are perhaps more interested in the arts than athletic prowess, a tour of the Picasso Museum is an absolute necessity. The museum, which first opened in 1963, now holds over 3,500 of Picasso’s works many of which feature his Blue Period from 1901 to 1904. Picasso, who created these melancholic paintings displaying various shades of blue, additionally donated books and academic pieces to the museum stationed in the town that shaped much of his development when his family moved there following the death of his younger sister. Barcelona Spain luxury hotels such as the elegant eighteenth century Hotel Boria, located within 500 meters of the Picasso Museum, provide excellent accommodations and amenities such as high speed internet access, complimentary newspapers, concierge services, air conditioning, dry cleaning, and 24 hour security.

How do you recycle tires?

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Car tires. Every American driver has four of them and when it comes time to replace them it can be costly. But what happens to those tires that you get rid of? Tires can be recycled but it is costly and difficult to do so. So here’s a glimpse of how they get rid of your old truck wheels.

On the nice end, some tires end up on the playground. They are shredded and used to make the rubber surface that you can find on some playgrounds. But not many tires meet this kind of fun end. Most end up in land fills or into factories that have to burn them, which is not too nice for the environment.

So to reduce your environmental impact when it comes to tires, you should make sure not to need to replace your tires very often. It’s all about tire maintenance. You need to make sure your tires have proper pressure and alignment and have them rotated often.

There are websites like Earth911.com where you can find places in your area where you can take your tires to be recycled. You can even turn old tires into a fashion accessory with Vulcana. The company makes shredded tire handbags and other accessories. What an eco-statement!

I bet you didn’t know the rubber that surrounded your truck rims could be so important in how it effects the environment. If you are considering getting new tires, think about if you really need them, or if you can make your tires last longer. You never know, it may just be that your tires are not properly inflated or just need to be aligned. Also think about just having your tires rotated to get the most out of your tires.

Think about how your tires are impacting the environment, it’s a worthy worry.

The Variety of Singapore

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

There are many activities to participate in in the city of Singapore.  Many of the best Singapore hotels, have brochures and pamphlets that will give the first time tourist a better idea of where they would like to spend their time.  For those wanting to stay up and dance through the night, then the Mohamed Sultan district is the place to go.  This is the club zone with best of discos and DJ driven dance scenes.

In the Singapore Zoological Gardens one can actually come into an enclosure with cheetahs, or swim with the pink dolphins on the island of Sentosa.  And for those wanting more of an outdoor experience with animals, there are the sharks in the Underwater world, as well as seals and rare creatures in the sea, perfect even for those that are not certified in scuba diving.  One can handle wild falcons or others at the Jurong Bird Park or dine with flamingos.  At the Sungei Buloh Wetland one can catch a glimpse of the Monitor lizard, a rare beast that is quite elusive in the wild, but is impressive at two feet in length.

There are many flavors to chose from in the restaurants as well as museums and art galleries.  For those interested in the history of war, the Chagi Chapel Museum and the Fort Siloso, which is on the island of Sentosa, illustrate and document the effects on the country during World War Two.  Or for those interested in this kind of novelty, the largest fountain in the world is located in Singapore, at Suntec.

And there is even a shopping mall that is open twenty four hours a day at the Mustafa Centre. Or if shopping is really on the mind, a trip to Orchard Road is in order.  This is the favorite spot for Singaporeans to shop and is a feast for traveling to the city.  There is a grand variety of adventures on the island of Singapore.

Kabuki Theater in Hong Kong

Monday, July 13th, 2009

One of the most fascinating aspects or traveling to other countries is in the art forms of that particular region.  Entire histories of cultures are written into the texts of the literature, poetry and plays, as well as painted on the canvases or thrown on the potting wheel.  Sometimes the history occurs during a performance, and sometimes the history is in the development and the techniques of any given form.  One of the performing arts that is traditional in Hong Kong, and in the entire region of Asia.  This ancient form of drama has been continually popular, even in modern times, when the scripts were not so modern.  Part of the reasons for this occurrence is that it is not a medium that is about contemporary issues and society.  Much like the silent movies of Hollywood, or the Westerns, or the Shakespeare plays being produced, these are forms in and of themselves.  Westerns or pieces of Shakespeare’s work, just don’t seem to fit well when modernized and this is true for the Kabuki Theater traditions.

This traditional art form is best experienced live, and many staying in the best Hong Kong hotels, on vacation and holiday will want to head out to see at least one performance during their trip.  This theater has been transforming and evolving from the inception and creation of it during the end of the sixteenth century.  This is a classical statement that has become perfected over time.  And while not as popular as it once was, audiences still attend in large numbers.  This theater was born in a time when the separations of the classes was very observed by the society, such as the noted difference in all aspects of life between that of the common man, with that of the king or even the warrior.  Those in the class of the commoner, where the merchants at the time, who although had become very wealthy, were still considered to be inferior.  And as many oppressed societies have done throughout history, the Kabuki was created by the merchant class as a way of entertaining, while expressing their emotions and frustrations.

SEO, ORM, what does it mean?

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

There are some abbreviations floating around that need to be a little bit deciphered. And I will do that for you. If you are in any type of business the abbreviations SEO and ORM should mean something to you and if they don’t, no worries this blog post will help you understand these abbreviations better.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Companies that offer search engine optimization services will make sure that a company will come up in a search engine for certain key words. For example, a key word for a Chicago web development company would be web development in Chicago or any variation of the kind of services that they provide at the company.

ORM stands for online reputation management. This means how you appear online. This can be for individuals or for businesses. It’s not enough just having an internet presence for your business. You also need to make sure that you are coming across how you want online. A business or an individual need to make sure that your company and the values that you are coming across to consumers and that they are receiving the information how you intended.

Both search engine optimization and online reputation management are things that you can hire a company to do for your business. Some companies have become experts in both because online reputation management is a rather new concept. Others make it part of their public relations practices. It’s all about how you appear to the public. It just so happens that the public has become so much vaster now than it once was. You have to make sure that you appear how you wish to a global audience.  Business is really becoming so global now that it is necessary to think about yourself and your business as a global entity.

Taking a Hawaii vacation

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

What really could be better than a vacation right about now? Not much right? A vacation where the only thing you really have to pack is a bikini and a cover up. Something where you lounge all day and eat and drink all night.

I just love those vacations where you get up in the morning, put on your swim suit and then lay your day away drinking boat drinks. Only to shower in the night, just in time to make it for dinner. Hoping that you don’t get too sunburned during the day. That is what Hawaii can offer you. And now is the time to think about going, because it is really more affordable than you could ever even dream of right now.

Because the economy is slow, vacations are more affordable than ever. The plane seats still need to be filled, and those cruise ships still need to cruise. But because everyone is cutting back on their budget, there are more seats available than ever for that Hawaii holiday. And I’m talking top destinations at Kauai hotels and other great places to stay on the islands.

If you want to get a really amazing deal, try booking far in advance, or making it an impromptu trip. Sites like Expedia do all the work for you and help you find vacation packages, so that your flight and hotel are booked together for one great stress free vacation.

There is still a need to shop around though. Try calling places you want to stay directly. Sometimes they will give you a better rate over the phone and you won’t have to pay your entire total until you check out, just a simple deposit. Deposits are usually about half of the overall total.

So, if you need to get away, think about going somewhere more exotic than you thought you could afford, because you just might be able to now!

KLite Buskers

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

When it comes to luxury hotels, Kuala Lumpur has some of the finest in the region.  KL is a “primate city,” which means that it is at least twice as large as its largest nearby city, making it a hub of urban culture in the region.  Gorgeous surroundings, both natural and cityscape, immediately put the visitors in a state of relaxation, and the good life is always here, always now.  The hotels are a mirror of the place, where a warm spirit of generosity runs through all we do, and we believe that regeneration of the mind and spirit are necessary not just on vacations, but every day.  There is an exquisite sense of taste in the hotels, where the design is world-class, and the ambience is divinely Malaysian.

The city is a rich blend of many cultures and languages, and visitors can spend hours just people-watching.  But there is so much more to do!  With fabulous restaurants featuring cuisines from around the world (but the local is truly fantastic!), night clubs that have some of the best beats in the region, and excellent shopping, there is a vivaciousness here that everyone will appreciate.  As you tour the city, you might notice high concentrations of street performers in certain areas.  If you do come across this, and you like the talent you see, be sure to drop some money in the hat.  The official name for this kind of performing is “busking,” and there are buskers all over the world.  In fact, in 2006, Kuala Lumpur hosted an International Buskers Festival.

This festival featured artists from all over the world, and they performed in seven different venues for five hours every day for nine days in a row.  This event was a big success, and not only helped bring attention to KL’s lively scene, but also highlighted the Buskers Festivals in other parts of the world.  Performers played music, did skateboard tricks, acrobatics, body art, circus acts, and all kinds of performance art to sometimes baffled and always interested crowds.  Tipping was done in the traditional fashion, by dropping money in the hat, only this time all the proceeds went to local charities.  It was a unique event in a very unique city, and for the rest, you’ll have to come and see it for yourself!

The Wind Turbine Farms in Scotland

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

The United Kingdom is windy.  This is one of the best locations in Europe and perhaps of the world, for the sites of wind farms, on and offshore due to this fact.  Wind farms utilize the wind turbine, or rather many wind turbines located in one area, generating large amounts of this free and abundant energy source.  The UK has become throughout the years one of the most attractive spots for this kind of development, and there is a lot of wind, and it is always blowing.  That is one consideration when companies are decided on new locations is that the wind, while it is not necessary that it is strong wind, the wind must blow consistently in order for the power plants to provide reliable and cost effective service.

In 1991, the first wind farm was built in the UK, and now less than twenty years later, there are one hundred eighty six wind farm plants operating in the country.  The goal of the British Wind Energy Association is that by the year 2020, the electricity for every home in Great Britain will be provided by the energy of harnessing the wind.  The largest of the farms in the UK is in Glasgow, Scotland, the Whitelee Farm.  This is an onshore site that has been in operation for years and is currently about to expand the number of turbines.  Scotland’s goal is that by 2020, at least fifty percent of the energy used in the country is that from renewable, and greener, resources.  Right now the Whitelee Farm produces enough energy to power Glasgow, and they are looking to expand the farm by almost forty percent.

Another project was recently approved for a farm even larger than the Whitelee, in Shetland.  Shetland has the most consistent and high speed winds in the entire UK, making it a supreme location for such a project.  Both projects when in use, will defiantly serve to meet the government of Scotland’s goal of 50% of the energy coming from the wind by 2020, as the goal set for one third by 2011, has already been met and surpassed.  Wind farms are becoming increasingly useful throughout the world, as the energy provided is cost effective, and produces no hazardous emissions, taking one more step towards a greener and more environmentally friendly way of life.

Dubai Activities

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Dubai is the most heavily populated city of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates. Sitting on the Persian Gulf, the major economic contributions for this city come from tourism, real estate and financial services. Tourists come from all over the world to experience Dubai. If you are wild and crazy, you will love Dubai. If you are quiet and shy, you will love Dubai. You will find out of the ordinary, exhilarating activities that test your physical prowess and courage. Or, you can just find a quiet, secluded area on one of the many beautiful and serene beaches not too far from the city to read, rest and reflect. One thing is certain, the five star hotels Dubai UAE offers will definitely be an experience all its own to enjoy and relish. The amenities are unbelievable, and the service is fabulous. You will certainly be spoiled during your stay.

As for something different, there is camel racing. This has become a very popular spectator sport in Dubai, with 15 racetracks featuring over 14,000 racing camels. There are over 9,000 handlers taking care of these camels. October thru April is the typical racing season, so if you are in Dubai at that time, be sure and put camel racing on your agenda.

If you would rather do than see, are you daring enough for a tandem sky dive? A definite heart pounding sport, you will dive from around 12,000 feet, attached to another jumper. Or if you are really daring, you can experience the free fall. Or how about a hot air balloon ride? Go up at sunrise and view the spectacular view of the Hajj Mountains. Prefer to keep your feet on the ground? What about surfing, or take a desert safari trip, charter a boat to do some fishing or just enjoy the beautiful sights. Whatever you are looking for, you’re sure to find it at Dubai.

Delhi’s Monitor Lizards

Monday, July 6th, 2009

When it comes to world-class in accommodations, our four-star hotel in Delhi are the cream of the crop.  There is a splendid blend of old-world hospitality and new-world amenities here, allowing the guests to focus on the rejuvenation of the body and mind, rather than fret over the small details.  We’ve already got the details covered, and also have many added details to make your vacation sweeter.  Delhi is a fascinating city, and a unique combination of tradition and innovation, and so are our hotels.  Luxury is an experience that is not to be missed in this lifetime, and you can find it here.

While your hotel will be the place you lay your hat while you’re here, there are fantastic urban adventures to be had in the city.  Delhi is one of the oldest continually-occupied cities in the world, and it is extremely rich in history and culture.  People watching is at a premium here, where the whole human drama plays itself out daily on the streets here.  And there are excellent tours and sight-seeing opportunities here that the whole family can enjoy.  There are also monitor lizards here.  Wait.  Monitor lizards in Delhi?

There are a lot of myths about these creatures, and they are terribly terribly interesting.  They are endangered, and poachers and smugglers still try to capture them for their meat.  It is believed in some circles that their tails hold aphrodisiac powers, and there are other legends, but one thing is certain: spotting one is a very rare event, and a remarkable one.  They don’t move very fast when in the light of day, so it’s best to call the authorities right away, to keep the lizards safe and away from humans.  There is an excellent organization in Delhi called Wildlife S.O.S., and they receive some interesting phone calls.  Scared citizens will call about the snake in their yard with claws, and crowds will be gathering around the small dragon with a snake’s tongue.  At least one of the employees of Wildlife S.O.S., Kapur, once worked as a snake charmer, so he’s well-prepared to meet small dragons.  Monitor lizards, however, are harmless, and rather beautiful creatures that help make India an interesting place.

Singapore Nesting Time

Monday, July 6th, 2009

I noticed it’s nesting season in Singapore. Once the migrants leave, by late March, our local birds got into high gear. Courting rituals, gathering nesting materials and then incubating and hatching their little babies. I have witnessed this everywhere. The Doves, Mynas, to Hornbills and now the Olive-backed Sunbirds, which really thrills me. See, birds in Singapore tend to nest this time of year because there is less competition for food from those wonderfully beautiful, but pesky migratory birds. So, there’s more grub to feed the their new brood of cute little twittering, hungry and featherless chicks.

I was so excited when I located a nest of an Olive-backed Sunbird in one of the trees in the garden of one of the Singapore Luxury Hotels
I work for. I discovered its brown droplet nest in a tree with which I was pruning. I managed to delicately prune around the nest to leave it undisturbed. I’ve been monitoring it assiduously in between the other hotels I work at. I’ve seen the female bird fly to and fro sporadically from the nest to go fetch for food for her young. I wish I was an expert photographer because that activity is hard to capture because the intervals between her arrival is extremely short and she heads straight into the nest without hanging about outside the nest. Very frustrating to capture on film.

Plus, there’s no way to photograph the baby chicks cause of the distance and angle I’d need, it’s just not available. So, it’s just the female and the occasional male that I manage to see, but not see how they feed or what they feed there young. Too bad, really. Maybe I should set up my telescope instead! Or, like those National Geographic people do, hide a video camera inside the nest. Oh well, I’m not that sophisticated or have the means to do so. Someday, maybe, just maybe.
